How to APA Format an Article

According to Purdue University, the American Psychological Association (APA) is the most popular style for formatting and citing sources in the social sciences. By using the APA guide you guarantee consistency throughout your article, in both grammar and style, and make it easier for the reader to locate specific information.

Instructions

    • 1

Follow general APA guidelines for documents. These include 1 inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman font and double-spacing throughout your article. Paragraph indentations should range from five to seven spaces

    • 2

Ensure the correct order of pages. Your article should have a Title Page, Introduction, Abstract and Body. Finish with your references, any tables, figures or appendixes.

    • 3

Include in-text citations. According to APA style, you should include the author's name and the publication date of the source in parentheses in the text. A direct quote should also include the page number from the source.

    • 4

Follow APA style for tables. Display each table on a separate page with a double-spaced heading.

    • 5

Follow APA style of references. Note that print and electronic sources are referenced differently, as are books, articles and other print sources. Use a separate page and label with 'References' in the center. Remember to use double-spacing.
