Catholic Distance University (CDU) was founded in 1983 and has undergraduate, graduate and continuing education programs. On the bachelor's degree level, CDU offers a degree completion program which requires that students have at least 88 undergraduate credits from another institution. Students enrolled in this program take classes about the Catholic faith, with an emphasis on sacred scriptures and texts.
The master's program in theology at CDU requires that students complete 39 credit hours of coursework, which includes classes on subjects such as Catholic culture, sacred scripture, philosophy, moral principles and spirituality in the Catholic faith. In addition, students in this program must take comprehensive exams based on the material taught in the core and concentration classes, as well as complete a master's thesis.
CDU is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council.

Saint Joseph's College of Maine offers a bachelor's degree in theology that can be completed online. The program requires that students complete 128 credit hours of instruction. Students in this program take classes on subjects such as the old and new testaments, modern Catholicism, Catholic doctrine, theology of the body and Catholic spirituality.
The school also offers a mater's degree in pastoral theology, which can be completed with 36 credits of coursework. Students in this program take courses on the sacraments, moral theology and how to minister to the aging.

The Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) offers distance learning seminary classes that allow students to do their work through the Internet, videoconferencing and tapes. The school offers a master's degree in religion, which can be completed in 60 credit hours of instruction. Students enrolled in the program take courses in Christian thought, the history of Christianity, pastoral ethics and the gospels. In addition to online classes, students in the program must complete two four-day seminars that are held on campus.
Students in the master's degree program are also required to participate in a mentoring program, where they meet with mentors who give them support as they complete their studies. RTS is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools and the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
