Accredited Online Music Degrees

While students pursuing music performance degrees are required to attend courses on campus, those interested in music technology, music education, music therapy and music business can find programs online. Distance-learning programs offer students an opportunity to earn their degree while working or fulfilling family obligations. Online programs may require students to have certain computer hardware or software programs.

    • Boston University offers a Doctorate in Musical Arts in Music Education online. Students receive textbooks for each course and lectures can be viewed online. The program is 44 credits, and students are required to complete a dissertation. Courses in the program include critique in music education, foundations of music education, analytical techniques, contemporary issues of music education, aesthetics and criticism. The New England Association of Schools and Colleges accredits the programs at the school.

    Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis

    • Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis offers a Master of Science in Music Therapy. The program is 100 percent online, and may be ideal for students who are currently working full time and want to pursue graduate work in the field. Courses in the program focus on music technology, multimedia production, and Music Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) applications. In order to graduate, students are also required to complete a thesis. Programs at the school are accredited through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

    Full Sail University

    • Located in Winter Park, Florida, Full Sail University offers a Bachelor of Science in Music Business online. The program focuses on business education principles and the modern music industry. In addition to taking basic business courses in accounting, economics and marketing, students also learn about production management, distribution, intellectual property and music production. Professors and students communicate through e-mail, discussion boards and chat rooms. Programs at the school are accredited through the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges.

    Foothill College

    • Foothill College is Los Altos Hills, California, offers an online Associate of Arts in Music Technology. Students in the program take courses in music business, entertainment law and new media, digital sound, music fundamentals and recording arts. Opportunities are also available for students to learn how to use ProTools, which is a musical engineering software program. This online program educates students through online streaming and tutorials. The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges accredits the programs at the school.
