How to Reference Websites Using APA Format

The American Psychological Association guidelines for referencing websites are very specific. APA guidelines, which have existed since 1929 when they were first introduced to streamline writing, are now defined in the 6th edition of the APA guide. APA style is required for all psychological research papers. Additionally, it is often required for students when writing papers. Because research is commonly done online, being familiar with the APA guidelines for online references will streamline the writing process.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite sources found on websites within the text, as well as in references. List the author's name and the year of publication. For example, if a website contained information from a specific author, then you would cite it as "(author, year)" or you could write "Smith (2009) recommends..." or "In 2009, Smith found that ..." Show up to five authors names for in-text citations, such as "Smith, Jones, Adams, Martin, and Green (2009)..." If there are six or more authors, use only the first name followed by "et al." For example, "Smith et al. (2009)..."

    • 2

Use in-text citations only to refer to an entire website. The citation will include the URL of the website in parentheses. When referring to the entire eHow website, you would write "eHow... (http://www.ehow.com/)."

    • 3

Verify that a website is the most recent version or has the most recent update on that information. The American Psychological Association recommends this as a general guideline when documenting online references.

    • 4

Follow APA reference guidelines for off-line references of journals, followed by the URL of the website. You will use the author(s), the year, the name of the article, the journal name, the edition, page numbers and then the URL. For example, "Smith, A., & Jones, P. L. (2009). How Teachers Can Help Students, Teaching Today, 3, 10-13. Retrieved from http:..." List the title of the article first, if the web page lists no author. In that case, the reference would be "How Teachers Can Help Students (2009). Retrieved from http:.." APA recommends copying and pasting the complete URL.

Italicize names of reports found online. When listing a non-journal report, the name of the report is italicized in both the in-text citation and in the references section.
