How to Cite Websites in the Body of a Paper in APA Format

The American Psychological Association, or APA, uses a certain format for writing research papers and citing sources. The APA format is most commonly used within the social sciences field. When using APA format, sources are cited in-text following a quotation or when paraphrasing the information. The source is also listed in more detail at the end of the research paper on a "References" page. Citing a website will depend on the type of website and exact information used.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the author's name and date for an in-text citation if one is listed on the website. After quoting or paraphrasing the information, add the author's last name and date of publication in parentheses. For instance, Partners in Paws is a group of teenagers from Texas that works to end homeless animals (Dickson, 2011).

    • 2

Include only the date in parentheses if you use the author's name in the sentence. For example, According to Dickson, Partners in Paws is a group of teenagers from Texas that works to end homeless animals (2011).

    • 3

Add parentheses following the last word of the sentence or paragraph about a general website with no author. Type the exact website including the http:// after the first parenthesis.

    • 4

Close the parenthesis and place a period outside of the parenthesis. For instance, Dog Mountain is a tribute to artist Stephen Huneck and the loyalty of dogs (http://www.dogmt.com/local-area.html).

    • 5

Include a full citation of the website on the "References" page if you are citing a specific portion. General websites that were cited in-text, you do not need to include on the "References" page.
