How to Do APA Format Selections From Anthologies

When documenting certain source materials, the American Psychological Association (APA) requires specific formatting. Works such as anthologies have specific guidelines to be followed in order to be properly formatted in APA style. There are certain easy-to-follow guidelines you can use when including the use of anthologies in a written body of work.

Instructions

    • 1
Include the selection and anthology information within the reference.

When including the anthology selection as a reference, format the selection by including information on both the selection from the anthology and the anthology itself. Use the following format: Author's Name. (Year of Publication). Title of selection. In Editor's Name (Ed.), Title of Anthology (page numbers of selection). Place of Publication: Publisher.

    • 2
Italicize the title of the anthology.

Write the author's name in the last name, first initial format (but not the editor's), and italicize the title of the anthology. Only capitalize the first word of each title. For example, Smith, J. (2008). Selections from anthologies. In N. Jones (Ed.), How to do formatting (pp.28-30). New York, NY: Super Press.

    • 3
In-text citation format requires the selection's information.

When formatting an in-text citation for a selection from an anthology, use the information from the selected work, not the anthology the selection was taken from. This would be the selection's author and year of publication, not that of the anthology.
