How to Format Anthologies in APA

Creating a citation for an anthology in American Psychological Association (APA) format takes a bit of ingenuity on the writer's part. APA guides writers on how to cite a chapter in a book but not a work in an anthology. To create a citation for an anthology, treat the text you are citing as a chapter in a book. However, because the work cited is most likely longer than a chapter, you will have to format the texts appropriately.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the requisite information. You will need the title of the anthology, the editor of the anthology, the title of the cited text, its author, page numbers and publication date, as well as the anthology's publisher and location of publication.

    • 2

Write the cited text's author(s) names in last name, first initials format: Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. In parentheses, type the year of the cited text's publication followed by a period: (2011).

    • 3

Format the title of the cited text. If it is a chapter, the title receives no special punctuation. However, if it is an excerpt from a book, the title is formatted in italics.

    • 4

Write "In," followed by the names of the editors, and then writer "(Eds.)" after the editor's names: In Samuel Johnson and Alexander Pope (Eds.).

    • 5

Place a comma after (Eds.), then write the title of the anthology in italics. After the title of the work, in parenthesis include the pages in which the cited work appears: (Eds.), Experiments in Existentialism (194-211).

    • 6

Write the location of publication, then a colon, then the anthology's publisher, followed by a period. London: England.
