How to Insert a Header in APA Format

A written body of work, such as a paper or essay, that follows the American Psychological Association (APA) format is organized to present the content in a specific way. This includes specifically inserted headers. Properly inserted headers give the reader important information and contribute to the overall organization of the work. Follow the correct guidelines to insert a header in APA format.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a header by printing the words "Running head", followed by an abbreviated title of the work at the very top of the page. Include only the full title of the work in the center of the title page. Place the page number at the top of the page as well. Align the title to the left and the page number to the right.

    • 2

Place a colon between the words "Running head" and the abbreviated title. Capitalize each letter of the abbreviated title, but not each letter of the words "Running head." For example, "Running head: TITLE OF THE WORK."

    • 3

Include the header on each subsequent page, minus the words "Running head." Continue to align the capitalized title to the left, and the page number of each page to the right.
