How to Insert a Running Head

If you'll be taking a course in the social sciences during your college career, chances are you'll be required to write a paper in American Psychological Association (APA) format. This format has specific elements including a title page, reference page, in-text citation style and a running head. The running head is a shortened version of the title of your paper inserted into the header of each page. You'll need to know the title of your paper before creating the running head.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a header in your Word document by clicking on "Insert" on the main menu, then click on "Header." Choose the "Blank" option for your header.

    • 2

Situate your header on the left side of your document. Ensure there is a 1-inch margin from the edge of the paper.

    • 3

Type a condensed version of your title in all capital letters. The shortened version of your title should not exceed 50 characters.

    • 4

Double-click on the header you have just entered. This will bring you to the "Header and Footer Tools, Design" menu. Click on "Different First Page."

    • 5

Type the header for the first page of your document as "Running head: CONDENSED TITLE" using the exact condensed title you inserted on the other pages. This first page will be your title page.
