How do I Format a Header for APA Papers?

The American Psychological Association publishes APA Style as a guide for the construction of research papers. Often, students best know APA for its directives regarding the citation of references. The APA format, however, provides rules and regulations for all aspects of a paper, including the use of headers, which the style requires, throughout your paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a header on the title page of your paper. As the Purdue University Online Writing Lab notes, place the header next to the left margin of your title page and the page number next to the right margin. Your title page's header should read as follows:

Running head: TITLE OF YOUR PAPER

    • 2

Include a header on the page immediately following the title page. Construct this header as shown below with your paper's title flush left and the page number flush right.

      TITLE OF YOUR PAPER

    • 3

Repeat this style of header throughout all subsequent pages of your paper.
