How to Insert Running Headers in an APA Format

The formatting standards laid down by the American Psychological Association are followed by many colleges, institutions and publications, especially in the social sciences. A running header, or running head, provides the title of a manuscript at the top of each page for easy reference. APA provides its own style guidelines for structuring a running head in a paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Type "Running Head," followed by a colon and a space, in the header of your title page.

    • 2

Type the title of your paper in capitals immediately after. The full running head should look something like this:

Running Head: STUDY ON THE EFFECTS OF TOBACCO

    • 3

Align the header to the left of the title page.

    • 4

Insert only the title, in capitals and without "Running Head," in the header of all subsequent pages of your manuscript. Align left every time.
