How to Insert Page Headers in APA Format

The American Psychological Association (APA) provides guidelines on how to properly format a body of text. One APA requirement is the correct use of page headers, or the small section of text located at the top of the page and separated from the main body of the text. The page header usually conveys important information about the work to the reader. APA requires page headers for works like research papers and essays.

Instructions

    • 1
Use an abbreviated title in the page header.

Insert the title of the article at the very top of the page, aligned left, and the page number aligned to the right. The page header of the first page, or the tile page, should contain the words "Running head", followed by an abbreviated title of the paper. (Include the full title of the paper in the center of the title page.)

    • 2
Print the title in all caps.

Print the abbreviated title in the page header in all uppercase letters and place a colon between the words "Running head" and the title. For example, "Running head: ABBREVIATED PAPER TITLE".

    • 3
Align the title to the left on all pages

Format each subsequent page header after the title page with the abbreviated title, minus the words "Running head." Again, capitalize each letter in the title and align the title with the left side of the page.
