How to Head a Research Paper

Writing research papers will be an integral part of your high school and college careers. In addition to the research, the paper has specific formatting, which starts with the title, or the head. There are two predominant methods of heading papers. They are called Modern Language Association (commonly known as MLA) and American Psychological Association (APA) formatting. MLA is generic, and APA is used to format papers in the social sciences.

Instructions

  1. APA Formatting

    • 1

Make sure that you have the right type of paper. The APA format specifies 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper.

    • 2

Format the paper. Make sure that you have a 1-inch margin on each side of the paper. Use the correct font for APA formatting - Times New Roman. The font size can be 10 to 12 point.

    • 3

Create the title page starting with the title in the upper half of the page. The title doesn't have to be at the very top of the page -- it can be placed a few lines down (APA doesn't have more-detailed specifications for the placement of the title). All of the words on the title page should be centered. The title should be 12 words or less, and it should be typed with the main words of the title starting in uppercase letters, with the remaining letters in lowercase. Right below the title, type the first name, middle initial and last name of the author. Type the institute in which the research was conducted right below the author's name.

    MLA Formatting

    • 4

Make sure that you have the right type of paper. The MLA format specifies 8 1/2-by-11-inch paper.

    • 5

Double space everything that you type in MLA format. Make sure that the font that you're using is legible. Times New Roman is the recommended font, although it's not required. Arial is another good choice. The size of the font should be 12. Set a 1-inch margin on each side of the paper.

    • 6

Create your head on the first page of the report itself. MLA formatting does not mandate a title page. On the left-hand corner of your first page, type your name. Below it type the name of your professor, below which you should type the course. Finally, enter the date on which you are submitting the paper right below the course name. The title of the paper should be centered on the page, and it should be a double-spaced line below the course name.
