How to Write an APA Research Paper

American Psychological Association style is among the most widely used writing styles in academia and the professional world. APA style is used in social and behavioral sciences as an authoritative style informing author ethics, word use and citation. Writing a research paper in the APA style requires the author to follow strict guidelines for structure, content, clarity, style and credibility.

Instructions

    • 1

Format the paper with 1-inch margins at the top, bottom and sides.

    • 2

Use double spacing throughout the entire paper.

    • 3

Number each page consecutively in the upper right-hand corner.

    • 4

Type the running head -- the title of the essay under 50 characters -- flush left at the top of the title page in all caps. For example, "Running head: EFFECT OF EMBEDDED QUESTIONS ON ACHIEVEMENT." Insert the title in the center of the title page with the student's name double-spaced below the title. Type the institution, city and state or city and country of the author, one double space below the student's name.

    • 5

Create an abstract for the paper with the word "Abstract" centered on the first line of the page. Type the abstract in a single-paragraph block format.

    • 6

Center the full title on the first page of the essay. Write the essay introduction double-spaced below the title.

    • 7

Create a topic heading for each section of the essay. Topic headings should be centered, boldfaced, and title case. Format subtopics with a second heading aligned left, boldfaced, and title case.

    • 8

Format each paragraph with 1/2-inch indents.

    • 9

Cite in-text references within sentences and paragraphs by the last name of the author and the year of publication at the end of the cited sentence. For example: "This study has proved the link between first names and success in life (Simon, 2007)." If using the author's name within the sentence, only cite the year of the publication. For instance, "Smith (1999) proposed that..."

    • 10

Format the reference list with a page break to start a new page. Center the word "References" on the first line of the page. Double space references and use 1/2-inch hanging indents for the first line of each entry. Format single author books by the last and first name of the author, date of publication, title of book, place of publication, and the name of the publisher.
