How to Use MLA Citation

The Modern Language Association, better known as MLA, outlines guidelines for writing and formatting research papers. The MLA style is primarily used in the fields of liberal arts and humanities. If you have to write a paper using MLA formatting, make sure you have a copy of the most current edition of the style guide. As of January 2011, the MLA Handbook is in its 7th edition. Your school or community library should have the most recent edition of the MLA handbook readily available.

Instructions

Use in-text citations when you refer to the works of others directly in your text. After you quote or paraphrase another person's work, you must place a citation in parenthesis. The exact format of these parenthetical citations varies depending on the type of work and the works cited page at the end of your paper. The parenthetical citation will immediately follow the ending quotation mark of a quote and the end parenthesis goes before the ending punctuation mark. If you are using the author's name in the text, you can cite only the page number in parenthesis, provided there is only one work by that author in your works cited list. If you are not using the author's name in the sentence, the last name of the author and the page you are quoting should be inside the parentheses.

    • 2

Begin your works cited page with the heading "Works Cited." Each new entry on the works cited list should be aligned with the left page margin. If an entry is longer than one line, indent each line after the first by five spaces. The works cited list should be double-spaced.

    • 3

Organize citations in alphabetical order using the authors' last names.

    • 4

      Cite print materials as follows:

Author's last name, First name. Title of the Piece. City of Publication: Publisher, Year published.

Underline the title of the book. If there is an editor instead of an author, cite the same way but follow the editor's first name with "-.ed." For more than one author, list their names in the order they appear on the book's title page with a comma between them. Authors listed after the first author's name should have their names written in order of first and last name. Doe, John, and Jane Doe.

Cite two or more works by the same author by giving the author's name in the first entry only. For the second entry by the same author, type three hyphens followed by a period. Then proceed with the standard print citation beginning with the book title.

Cite online periodicals or scholarly journals including the date of access and the URL. The full citation would appear as:

Last name, First name. "Title of Work." Name of Periodical followed by issue number (Year): Page. Database Name. Date accessed as DD Mmm. YYYY <URL>.

The name of the periodical and database name should be underlined.

Cite personal or professional websites as:

Author's last name, First name. Page Accessed. Date Accessed <URL>.
