How to Cite an Interview in the Body With APA Format

When researching and composing papers, some rely upon previously published information while others choose to go directly to a source and conduct an interview. If you elect to integrate an interview into your next research report, properly citing the interview is a necessary step. To ensure that individuals who read your resulting report know where you got your information and, as a result, see it as valid, you must include a proper in-text citation in the body of your report.

Instructions

    • 1

State the name of the person interviewed in the text itself. For example, if you interviewed an OSU researcher, you could say, "According to Sarah Anderson, a researcher from Ohio State University..."

    • 2

Insert a starting parenthesis immediately after the information from the interview. If you are using a large chunk of information from your interview all together, you can place this parenthesis after all of the information. You do not need to put this citation after each fact separately.

    • 3

Type the phrase "personal communication" immediately after the starting parenthesis. Follow this phrase with a comma.

    • 4

Include the date on which you conducted the interview, starting with the month followed by the day, then a comma and finally the year.

    • 5

Place an end parenthesis. Place this immediately after the year with no punctuation separating the two.

Do not include interviews or any personal communications on your reference page when using APA.
