How to Cite the Surgeon General in APA Format

Citing government agencies or officials comes with its own set of rules for American Psychological Association (APA) formatting. Both in-text and works-referenced citations are needed. The citation is created most easily when completed immediately. Waiting to compile a works-referenced list until the paper is finished is not recommended, as books or articles can get misplaced. Also, often finding an article a second time can take more effort. Try to keep all pertinent information immediately available while creating the APA citations.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the year the Surgeon General composed the document. For the in-text citation, all you will need to include is the Surgeon General's title and the year of publication. Citing the Surgeon General is treated as citing any other government agency. The reference will come within the sentence, as with all APA in-text citations: According to the Surgeon General (2004), "Whatever you want to quote."

    • 2

Compile the publication information for the document; you will need the name of the agency the Surgeon General works for (the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), the title of the publication, place of publication, and the year of publication.

    • 3

Format the information to comply with APA standards for citing a government agency. The final result appears in this order: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Title of the article. State of publication: Publisher, Office of the Surgeon General, Year. The title of an article will be in quotation marks, a book in italics.
