How to Make a List in APA Format

The American Psychological Association (APA) format is used to add polish and professionalism to articles and term papers. Although APA style does not allow for bulleted lists, numbered lists are okay as long as they are correctly spaced.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the number 1 in front of the first item in the list, followed by a period. Put the number 1 and all subsequent numbers in the space where an indented paragraph would begin.

    • 2

Place two spaces between the period after the number one and the first item in the list. Begin each listed item or statement with a capital letter.

    • 3

Align all subsequent lines of text in a listed item or statement with the first line. In other words, lines should begin two spaces in from the periods after the listed numbers.

    • 4

Repeat this process for all list items until the list is complete, using numbers 2, 3, 4, etc. for subsequent list items.
