How to Make an APA Bibliography

The American Psychological Association (APA) which was founded in 1892 and is the largest professional group for psychologist in the United States developed a style guide social sciences publications. Though APA style is mostly used in the social sciences, it has been applied to writing in other fields. The bibliography in APA style, also called a reference list, provides the information necessary for readers to locate the sources cited in a paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a reference page. This is a new page at the end of your document. Type and center the word "References" at the top of the page. List your bibliographic entries in alphabetical order by the author's last name. If the author's name is unknown, then alphabetize the entry by the title of the source being referenced.

    • 2

Create a reference for every citation that appears in your paper. Each source that you have cited in your paper should have a full entry on your reference list. If you cite a reference in your paper several times, you only need one entry for the reference. If use use different versions of a reference, such as three different editions of the same textbook, you should write a separate entry in your reference list for each edition. Do not create entries for references you do not cite in your paper.

    • 3

Format each entry according to the source from which the information was retrieved. Some sources require different information to help the reader locate them. For example, when referencing a website, you should cite the date of publication and the date on which you retrieved information from the website. This is because websites are frequently updated. Thus, the content may change. Conversely, for books, you should cite the publication date and the edition.

    • 4

Format the entire list to adhere to APA guidelines. For example, the APA uses sentence style capitalization for the names of books. Accordingly, you would type Eugene O'Neill's Long days' journey into night and The new encyclopedia britannica as seen here. Hanging indentations, italicizing of longer works, and capitalization of major words in journal titles are a few of the overarching rules that you should apply to your reference list.
