How to Make a Reference List Online

Whether you're writing an analytical paper for a literature class or an expository piece for a history class, you may need to create a list of the references you've used for your research. Middle school through Ph.D. students can make use of an online site to create a reference list in the style of your choosing.

Instructions

    • 1

Point your Web browser to the bibliography creation site you wish to use. Easybib, Son of Citation Machine and Bibme are all options from which to choose.

    • 2

Click the type of source you are citing. This may be a Web site, magazine article, book, journal or database. You may select to use a government document as a source as well.

    • 3

Select the type of format you are using. You can select MLA (Modern Language Association), APA (American Psychological Association) or Chicago style.

    • 4

Enter the requested information. This may include the author's name, title of the work, edition, volume, year published and page number cited.

    • 5

Click "Submit" or "Create" to view the citation. This will also begin a list of references. Continue to add sources to build your list.

    • 6

Select "Export to Word" or a similar feature to automatically generate a Word document containing your reference list. Alternately, you can copy and paste your reference list into a text document, email or other format you choose.
