How to List Pictures As a Reference

One of the most important aspects of writing a college-level paper is making certain to include bibliographic information for all of your sources in a reference list at the end. This includes non-text sources such as images. The Chicago Manual of Style publishes easy-to-use guidelines for the listing of images as references. The exact form of your reference will depend on whether you are citing an image from a book or an image from a website.

  1. Citing an Image in a Book

    • 1

      List the author's last name and first name, followed by a period. For example:

      Brown, Sam.

      List the title of the book, followed by a period.

      List the city of publication, publisher and year of publication in the following format:

      Boston: Harvard Press, 2010.

      List information that allows your reader to locate the image in the book. If the book is listed as a numbered table or image, include that information. For example:

      Table 1.2.

      The finished reference-list entry should appear as follows:

      Brown, Sam. The Impact of Wealth on Education. Boston: Harvard Press, 2010. Table 1.2.

    Citing an Online Image

      List the author's last name and first name, followed by a period. For example:

      Brown, Sam.

      List the title or caption of the image, followed by a period. For example:

      Rates of Literacy Among the Poor.

      List the name of the website, followed by a period. For example:

      EducationWeb.

      List the type of file, followed by a comma. For example:

      JPG,

      List the URL.

    • 10

      List the date of access in parentheses. For example:

      (accessed February 11, 2010)
