How to Reference Class Notes

When writing a term paper, you must list all sources of information in a reference section at the end of your paper, including unpublished sources such as your notes from a class lecture. The Chicago Manual of Style publishes easily followed guidelines for the proper citation of class notes.

Instructions

      List the name of the professor, last name then first name, separated by a comma, then a period: Smith, John.

      List the title of the lecture, followed by a period, in quotation marks: "The Human Brain."

      List the type of source, followed by a comma: Lecture notes,

      List the name of the university, followed by a comma: Harvard,

      List the city, followed by a comma: Boston,

      List the state, followed by a comma. Use the standard postal abbreviation: MA,

      List the date of the class lecture, followed by a period: December 11, 2007.

      Ensure that the finished citation reads: Smith, John. "The Human Brain." Lecture notes, Harvard, Boston, MA, December 11, 2007.
