How to Cite an Entry in a Reference Work for MLA

You must correctly cite all sources that you use to write college term papers, or you may lose points on the assignments. There are several citation styles. If you are studying a liberal arts discipline such as literature or history, it is likely that your professor has asked you to adhere to guidelines published by the Modern Language Association. You can accurately cite information from a reference work in MLA format by following simple instructions.

Instructions

    • 1

List the title of the article or entry in quotation marks, followed by a period. For example:

      "Lake Erie."

    • 2

List the title of the reference work in italics, followed by a period.

    • 3

List the edition in the following format:

      6th ed.

    • 4

List the year of publication, followed by a period.

    • 5

List the medium of publication, followed by a period. This should appear as follows:

      Print.

    • 6

The finished citation should appear in the following format (with the title of the reference work italicized).

"Lake Erie." The Encyclopedia of North America. 6th ed. 2010. Print.
