How to Cite a Dictionary Entry in MLA

Properly formatted citations are critical to a well-developed research paper. Presenting your "works cited" page in MLA format allows your audience to quickly track and verify your source material, lending credibility to your paper. Instructions

    • 1

Give the author's name first, if available. Remember to record the last name first, followed by a comma, then the first name and middle initial. If no specific author is attributed, leave this out.

    • 2

Place the title of the entry next, followed by a period, and surrounded by quotation marks. If your citation began with an author's name, insert two spaces between the author and the title of the article.

    • 3

Indent two spaces after the article title and record the specific definition of the entry you are citing, by writing "Def.", followed by the number or letter of the specific definition. Complete the entry with a period. If the entry you are citing has only one definition, or if you do not wish to cite a particular definition, leave this out.

    • 4

Indent two spaces and record the full title of the dictionary, followed by a period. Underline this section of the citation.

    • 5

Indent two spaces and enter the edition of the work. The edition should be written using a digit followed the notation "ed." So the entry for the seventh edition of a dictionary would appear "7th ed."

    • 6

Indent two spaces, and enter the year of publication or copyright of the dictionary, followed by a period. If the edition has had multiple copyrights, only include the most recent one.
