How to List a Professor As a Reference

When writing a college term paper, you may find that you need to quote something your professor said in a lecture. You must be sure to cite your professor as a source. Simply passing off your professor's words or ideas as your own is plagiarism. The citation of lectures is a bit different from citing a published work because there is no publication information. However, both the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Modern Language Association (MLA) offer guidelines for the correct citation of class lectures.

Instructions

  1. Citing a Lecture in APA Format

    • 1

List the professor's last name, a comma, first initial and a period. For example:

      Smith, F.

    • 2

List the year, a comma and the month in which the lecture occurred in parentheses, followed by a period. For example:

      (2010, October).

    • 3

List the title of the lecture, followed by a period. Capitalize only the first letter of the title and the first letter of any proper noun. For example:

      Dreams and the hippocampus.

    • 4

List the name of the class in italics, followed by a period. Again, capitalize only the first letter and any proper nouns. For example:

      An introduction to psychology.

    • 5

List the institution at which the lecture occurred, the city and the state in the following format:

Lecture conducted from Harvard University, Boston, MA.

    • 6

Ensure that the finished citation appears in the following format:

Smith, F. (2010, October). Dreams and the hippocampus. An introduction to psychology. Lecture conducted from Harvard University, Boston, MA.
