How to Create an APA Bibliography

APA, or American Psychological Association, style is a format and set of guidelines for writing formed in 1929 and built upon continually over the years. It is commonly used as the primary format for writing in many colleges and other institutions nationwide. APA style serves the purpose of making essays and other written work more credible and verifiable. One of the ways this is accomplished is though a clear bibliography format with set rules and standards.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather together a list of every source and reference that you used when putting together your work. If all of your references are cited or quoted in text, then a bibliography is not a necessity. You should instead put together a reference list.

    • 2

Organize your references in alphabetical order, based on the author's last name. If there is more than one author for a reference, use the first author listed on the source itself.

    • 3

List the author or authors names at the start of each source. APA format requires you to list their last name first, followed by their middle initial, and finally, first initial. Use commas to separate the names if several authors are listed, and cite them in the order they appear on the original source.

    • 4

List the year of publication after the authors name. Place the four digit year within parentheses followed by a comma.

    • 5

List the book title, documentary or magazine name. Include issue numbers and page numbers if applicable. Only capitalize the first word of the title, and the first word of any subtitles included. End with a comma.

    • 6

List the city of publication for any books, magazines or digests. Follow with state initials, separating the city and state with a comma.
