How to List Multiple Questions in APA

The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) sets out guidelines for citation and formatting commonly used in social science disciplines. APA style allows for three types of seriation: lettered within the text, numbered and bulleted. However, because questions are sentences and as such cannot be listed within a sentence, you must use either numbers or bullets to list multiple questions in accordance with APA style.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin your first listed question with an Arabic numeral 1, followed by a period. Begin subsequent citations with 2, 3, and so on.

    • 2

Double-space numbered lists just as you would double-space all text in APA style.

    • 3

Capitalize and punctuate items in numbered lists just as you would ordinary sentences. When listing questions, this means beginning each sentence with a capital letter and ending each question with a question mark. Your list of questions should look like this:

Tom was asking himself three questions:

      1. Who was this man?

      2. What did he want?

      3. How was Tom going to get him away from his parents?

Numbered lists may imply chronology or a hierarchy of importance. If you wish to avoid this, simply replace the numbers and periods with bullets. According to APA style, you may use any symbol in front of items in a bulleted list.
