How to Cite a Broadcast APA Style

Occasionally, you'll find yourself in a situation while writing a term paper when you have to cite a type of resource that you do not commonly cite, such as a television broadcast. However, all sources need to be cited so that you don't open yourself up to charges of academic plagiarism. Luckily, the American Psychological Association (APA) sets clear guidelines for the proper citation of television broadcasts.

Instructions

    • 1

List the name of the producer in the following format:

      Smith, A. (Producer).

    • 2

List the date of the broadcast in the following format:

      (2009, June 9).

    • 3

List the name of the program in italics. Only capitalize the first letter of the title and the first letter of any proper nouns. For example:

      The CBS nightly news

    • 4

List the format in brackets, followed by a period. This should appear as follows:

      [Television broadcast].

    • 5

List the city and state from which the program was broadcast, followed by a colon. For example:

      New York, NY:

    • 6

List the name of the television station, followed by a period:

      Central Broadcasting Service.

    • 7

Ensure that the finished citation appears in the following format. Remember to italicize the title of the program.

Smith, A. (Producer). (2009, June 9). The CBS nightly news [Television broadcast]. New York, NY: Central Broadcasting Service.
