How to Cite Internet Images in APA Style

When writing a term paper, it is crucial to cite all sources that you use for information in a reference list at the end of your paper. This includes non-text sources such as images. The American Psychological Association (APA) sets specific guidelines for the proper citation of Internet images. The exact format of your citation will depend on whether you are citing a map or art such as a painting or photograph.

Instructions

  1. Citing a Map

    • 1

List the title of the map in italics. Only the first letter of the title should be capitalized, along with any proper nouns. For example:

      Southeast areas of lower Michigan

    • 2

List the format of the source in brackets, followed by a period. For a map, this should appear as follows:

      [Map].

    • 3

List the date of the map in parentheses and followed by a period. If possible, list the full date in the following format:

      (2006, January 14).

If you only know the year, only list the year. For example:

      (2006).

If there is no date available, list the following:

      (n.d.).

    • 4

List the web address if you accessed the map from a website. For example:

      Retrieved from www.usgs.gov/gen.mich/map/topo/3675

If you retrieved the map from a database, simply use the name of the database. For example:

Retrieved from the U.S. Geological Survey search database.

    • 5

Ensure that the finished citation appears in the following format:

Southeast areas of lower Michigan [Map]. (2006). Retrieved from www.usgs.gov/gen.mich/map/topo/3675

    Photographs or Paintings

    • 6

List the name of the photographer or artist in the following format:

      Smith, J.

    • 7

List the year the image was created in parentheses, followed by a period. For example:

      (2011).

    • 8

List the title of the image in italics. Only capitalize the first letter of the title, along with any proper nouns. For example:
