How to Cite GAO Reports in APA Format

When writing a composition paper for college, it is important to correctly cite all sources. Incorrect citation may be misconstrued as plagiarism, and a wrong reference looks sloppy and may lower your grade. If you are citing a report of the U.S. Government Accountability Office in your reference page, the style guidelines set out by the American Psychological Association are clear about how your citation should appear.

Instructions

    • 1

List the name of the author, followed by a period. When citing a GAO report, the author's name should appear as follows:

    • 2

List the year and month of publication in the following format:

      (2009, August).

    • 3

List the title of the report in italics. If there is a subtitle, the main title and subtitle should be separated by a colon. Only the first word of the subtitle should be capitalized. Follow the full title with a period. For example:

An Act to Overturn Taxation: Why this is really no good for anyone.
