A forensic science course offers students a foundational understanding of the scientific techniques used in the field to identify human remains. Students learn about the circumstances during death and examine the cases surrounding unexplained death. Topics in the course also focus on the forensic theory and application to cases.
Students in a law and criminal evidence course learn about the procedural considerations involving search and seizure, arrests and post-conviction treatment. This course teaches students how to handle evidence and about the admissibility of evidence in court. Additional topics include criminal investigation, crime scene procedures, investigation techniques, courtroom testimony and crime analysis.
A criminalistics course introduces students to the chain of custody followed at the crime scene. Students learn about trace evidence, fingerprints, fibers and origin determination. An opportunity is also available for students to learn about the various microscopy procedures involved in blood identification, drugs and toxicology, and other biological substances.
A forensic biology course combines topics involving chemistry, biology, mathematics and criminal justice. Students have an opportunity to complete work in a classroom and in the field. An opportunity is available for students to learn how to perform DNA analysis, write reports and present test findings, analyze crime scenes and conduct cause-of-death investigations.
Students enrolled in a forensic photography course learn how to take pictures in the field and produce electronic imaging. Opportunities are available for students to learn how to operate basic camera equipment and accessories. The course covers topics involving the storage of media, image management and photography of physical evidence at crime scenes.
