How to Correctly Cite a Newspaper Article in APA Format

APA style sets forth rules for formatting research papers and citing sources in the social sciences. It was developed by the American Psychological Association. When citing a newspaper article in APA style, one of the key differences from other citing methods is the inclusion of a page abbreviation. This helps readers understand that you are referencing page numbers, not volume numbers.

Instructions

Gather your information so the citation will be easy to write. You need the title, or headline, of the article and the page it appeared on, the author's name, the name of the newspaper and publication information.

    • 2

Cite a newspaper article with an in-text citation by putting the author's last name and the year of publication in parentheses. For example: (Perry, 2011).

    • 3

Cite the newspaper article in the reference list at the end of your paper using the following format: the author (last name, first initial), the date the article was published (year, date in parentheses). The article title or headline. The newspaper's name (in italics), and the page numbers. Use "p." before a single page number. If the newspaper article was on multiple pages, put "pp." and then the page numbers.

For example: Morgan, J. (2009, August 17). Boise State Spring Scrimmage. The Idaho Statesman, pp. 1C, 3C.
