How to Cite a Press Release in APA Format

Because press releases provide timely information directly from original sources, they often prove useful in research papers. Incorporate press releases carefully; as a conduit of public relations and sometimes even a form of advertising, they are inherently biased. Accordingly, press releases do not qualify as unprejudiced, scholarly sources of dependable data. Nevertheless, citing press releases enhances the depth and breadth of your research. Simply treat them as you would treat any biased source, using them to illustrate information from one particular angle.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite the name of the person or organization that issued the press release, followed by a period.

    • 2

Specify the publication date of the release, including month and day, in parentheses. First note the year and add a comma; then write the full name of the month---don't abbreviate it---and the numeral of the day, not followed by any letters. For example, write "February 6" rather than "Feb. 6th." Insert a period after the ending parenthesis.

    • 3

Write the title of the press release in italics. Capitalize only the first word, proper nouns and the first word after any colon. At the end of the title, before the period, insert a set of square brackets---not italicized. Write the phrase "Press release" within the brackets. Add a period after the last bracket.

    • 4

Cite the location of the organization or company that issued the press release if you accessed the press release as a print source (if you accessed the press release online, skip to the next step).

Add a colon at the end of the location; then, cite the name of the organization if you listed a specific person as the author. If you already cited the organization at the beginning of the citation, then write the phrase "Author" instead. Conclude this section with a period.

    • 5

Add a retrieval statement if you accessed the press release online.

If you listed a person as the author, then write "Retrieved from", the name of the publishing organization, the word "website" and a colon. If you already cited the organization as the author, then simply write "Retrieved from".

After a space, paste the exact and complete URL, without adding or removing any punctuation. Don't hyperlink the URL; if your word processor hyperlinks it automatically, then remove the hyperlink. The URL should appear in plain black text, neither underlined nor bold.
