How to Cite a Doctor in APA Format

The American Psychological Association (APA) style of writing is intended as a guideline for writing and citing references in a professional manner. There are a variety of sources that APA style allows a writer to cite, but to be in proper style, they must adhere to a certain format that varies depending on the type of source. Types of sources include books, journal articles, magazines, websites, personal references such as interviews and multimedia sources such as videos. Citing a doctor in a paper will also depend on the source from which the statement came.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the type of source that you are citing. To follow proper APA format, you will need to determine if the source is a book, magazine, video, journal article or other source. The type of source will dictate the exact format that your citation must take.

    • 2

Follow proper APA guidelines according to the source. Although many sources follow similar citation formats, some are slightly different. Typically, regardless of the type of source, APA style usually follows the format of who, when, what and where.

    • 3

Cite the doctor by listing her last name followed by a comma and the first letter of her first name, capitalized. APA style does not dictate that you place the doctor's title in the reference citation. For example, Dr. Susan Jones would appear as Jones, S.

    • 4

Provide the year that the resource you are using was created or copyrighted. The year that the source was created or copyrighted will appear after the name in parentheses. The closing parenthesis will be followed by a period. Continuing with the example, adding a year will look like this, Jones, S. (2011).

    • 5

Type the specific name of the resource you are using. If you are citing a doctor's quote from a book, the title of that book would go in this section. Providing the specific source for the citation is the "what" portion of APA style. Capitalize all major words in the title and place the entire title in italics.

    • 6

Reference the publication company and city in which they are located after the book title. The order of this portion is: name of publisher, city; state abbreviation, followed by a period.

    • 7

Cite interviews and conversation in-text only. These citations cannot be listed in the reference section because they are nonretrievable for your reading audience. To cite these conversations in-text, place the doctor's last name inside parentheses, followed by a comma and the year of the interview at the end of the statement, followed by a period.
