How to Cite a Doctor as the Author in APA

APA citation style is used to reference resources for business, social sciences (such as economics, sociology and psychology) and nursing papers or articles. The style was designed by the American Psychological Association with specific formatting rules. In APA format, a doctor, whether a Ph.D. or an M.D., is listed by the author's name, not the title in an in-text citation and on the reference list. You will need the author's last name and first initials but even if the original resource includes the title of doctor, you should not include it in your citations.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite a doctor in-text for APA style by using the author's last name and the date of publication in parentheses.

    • 2

Cite a doctor in the reference list by using the last name and first initials but not the title. For example: Jones, A. L. This method is true for any resource in APA where the author is a doctor.

    • 3

Use the doctor's title in the text of the paper if you feel it is essential to include it. APA does not include a doctor's title in the works cited page or the in-text citation but you can state that you are referencing a doctor's work in the paper's text. For example: Dr. Jones published a study on viruses.
