How to Cite Information in a Book in APA

If your professor asks for APA format, he is referring to the American Psychological Association guidelines for citing publications in a written work. These guidelines are most common for papers that deal with social sciences, such as psychology and sociology.

Instructions

    • 1

Follow APA format to cite a book with a known author. List the information in this order: Author (last name, first name), year of publication (in parentheses), title of work (italicized), location, publisher name. Below is an example using correct punctuation and Jane Doe as the author of "Get it Right" published by the Doe Co.

Doe, Jane. (2006) Get it Right. New York, N.Y.: Doe Co.

    • 2

Use a similar APA format for edited books without authors. Put the names of the editor(s) where the author's name went in Step 1. Follow that with "Eds" in parentheses. Here's an example:

Doe, Jane & Doe, John (Eds.). (2006). Get it Right. New York, N.Y: Doe Co.

    • 3

Use APA format for books with multiple editions. Follow previous formats, but list the edition in parentheses between the name of the book and the location. For example:

Doe, Jane. (2006). Get it Right. (6th Ed.). New York, NY: Doe Co.
