How to Cite a College Class in APA

A college class is considered a form of personal communication in APA, or American Psychological Association, style, and should be referenced as such. Personal communications are referenced in in-text citations but not in a reference list. It is important to distinguish between the college class lecture and the college class discussion. Both types of resources should be referenced, but in slightly different ways. Accurately citing a college class as a reference is essential to giving credit to sources used in your paper. APA style is typically used in social sciences essays, but other papers may need to use this format as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Cite the college class as a personal communication for an in-text citation. You will need the professor's name, the name of the class, the words "personal communication" and the date of the lecture. For example: (P. Jones, American Literature personal communication, March 13, 2007).

    • 2

Keep your reference list free of personal communication citations. List personal communication in-text only.

    • 3

Cite discussion within the college class by listing the name of the person involved in the discussion, such as a classmate, and the phrase "personal communication." If the discussion involves the entire class, don't include an author at all. Simply list the title of the course, the words "personal communication" and the date of the discussion. For example: (American Literature, personal communication, March 13, 2007).
