How to Internally Cite an Interview in APA

American Psychological Association, or APA, formatting standards are generally used by sociologists, psychologists and political scientists. APA format requires the author to provide both in-text citations and a reference list at the end of the work. Many people are unfamiliar with how to correctly cite personal interviews using APA standards. Fortunately, citing a personal interview is not very different from citing other kinds of sources.

Instructions

  1. Interview Citation Method I

    • 1

Place the parenthetical citation immediately after information from the interview is referenced.

    • 2

Begin the in-text citation with a parenthesis.

    • 3

Write the interviewed person's first initial and last name, followed by a comma.

    • 4

Write the words, "personal communication," followed by a comma.

    • 5

Write the full date of the interview, including the month, day and year (with a comma after the day).

    • 6

Conclude the in-text citation with a parenthesis.

    • 7

Double-check your citation to make sure the formatting is correct. It should look similar to this: "Many men were migrant laborers during the Great Depression (E. Jones, personal communication, January 5, 2010)."

    Interview Citation Method II

    • 8

Refer to the interviewed person directly in the text. Include his first initial and last name.

    • 9

Start a parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence in which the interviewed person is referred to.

    • 10

Begin the in-text citation with a parenthesis.

    • 11

Write the words, "personal communication," followed by a comma.

    • 12

Write the full date, including the month, day and year (with a comma after the day).

    • 13

Conclude the in-text citation with a parenthesis.

    • 14

Double-check your citation to make sure the formatting is correct. It should look similar to this: "According to E. Jones, many men were migrant laborers during the Great Depression (personal communication, January 5, 2010)."
