How to Cite a Definition in APA Format In-Text

When using any type of source material within a written project, such as an essay or paper, documentation in an accurate format is always required. One such source requiring proper citation is a definition, which is denoted by the American Psychological Association (APA) with a specific citation format. Follow the APA's format to correctly cite a definition in-text.

Instructions

    • 1
Include the definition and date to cite in-text.

Cite a definition within text using its basic information. Use the definition entry itself, and its date of publication. For example, (Propaganda, 2004). The date of publication refers to the source from which the definition was taken.

    • 2
Indicate when the date of the definition is unknown.

Place the definition and date in parentheses, with a comma separating the two. If the date is unknown, use "n.d." to indicate this. For example, (Fiasco, n.d.).

    • 3
Include the same information in both the in-text and reference citation.

Use the in-text citation to correspond to the definition's reference citation. The information used in the in-text citation should also be in the reference citation, along with the title of the source from which the definition was taken.
