How to Cite a Speaker in APA Format

The American Psychological Association, or APA, manual is a source for organizing content, citing references from books, speeches, articles and other sources of information and preparing manuscripts for publication. Specifically writers with social science, business and nursing audiences benefit from the style and format of APA because readers are presented with a familiar structure that allows them to focus on ideas and concepts rather than being distracted by different citation methods.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the name of the person who gave the speech, the year and month of the speech, the title of the speech and the location where the speech took place. For example, the works cited entry would be: Jackson, Kevin (2010, June). "The Adverse Affects of Pollution on the Climate". Presented at Alabama State University, Montgomery, Alabama.

    • 2

Write the author's name in parenthesis for an in-text citation. For example, Pollution has the potential to affect the environment and the human population in adverse ways (Jackson).

    • 3

Write the author's name in parenthesis and year for an in-text citation alternative. For example, The only way to counteract pollution is by finding the root of it (Jackson, 2011).
