How to Cite a Text Citation in APA

If you are adhering to American Psychological Association (APA) citation guidelines, you must cite every source that you quote or paraphrase from. References must be listed at the end of your paper, but you must also cite parenthetically within the text. The APA uses an author, publication year and page number citation system. Generally, these are the pieces of information that you will be listing in your citation.

Instructions

    • 1

In parentheses, list the author's last name, the year of publication, and the page number you are referring to. Separate these elements with commas. Precede the page number with "p." For example: (Brown, 1988, p. 75)

    • 2

Position your citation directly after the phrase you are quoting or paraphrasing. For example: One author claims that Lincoln "may have been sickened at the time" (Brown, 1988, p. 75), although others dismiss his claims.

    • 3

Omit the author's name from your parenthetical citation if you have already identified him in the sentence. In this case, the year of publication should be cited after the author's name, and the page number should appear after the quoted or paraphrased passage. For example: Brown (1988) claims that Lincoln "may have been sickened at the time" (p. 75), although others dismiss his claims.
