How to Cite an Article Using APA Standards

Whether you're writing a paper for class or a journal article for submission, it is important to properly cite all articles so your reader can locate them to verify information or just learn more. American Psychological Association (APA) style is one citation method commonly used in the sciences to cite resources. Properly citing research lends credibility to your writing.

Instructions

  1. In-Text Citation

    • 1

Cite the article's author and year of publication. If you state the author's name as part of your sentence, include the year of publication in parentheses immediately after the author's name. For example, "Smith (2004) argued...." If you do not include the author's name as part of your sentence, cite the author's name in parentheses with the date after you discuss the article. Your citation should look like this: (Smith, 2004).

    • 2

If you are quoting the article, cite the page number. If you include the author's name as part of your sentence, cite the page number in parentheses at the end of the quote. If you do not include the author's name in your sentence, cite the author's name, year of publication and page number together in parentheses after the quote.

    • 3

Put parentheses after quotation marks but before periods, place a lowercase "p" and a period before the page number and separate all three elements with commas. For example: (Smith, 2004, p.27).

    Reference Page

    • 4

Create a reference page entry for each article you cite in your text. The reference page should begin on a fresh page and should be titled "References," which should be centered and not written in bold, italics or with underline. All entries must be placed in alphabetical order and formatted with a hanging indentation, that is, every line after the first one of each entry should be indented.

    • 5

Begin your reference page entry with the author's last name, a comma and the author's first or first and middle initials. If you are citing an article with three to seven authors, separate authors' names with commas, but list all authors' names in the above format. Before the last author, use the "&" symbol. If you are citing an article with more than seven authors, list the first six, type an ellipsis and "&" symbol, then list the seventh. After you've listed all the authors, place a period.

    • 6

In parentheses, place the year followed by a period. If you are citing multiple articles by the same author or authors, the year helps your reader differentiate between the two, and you must put the earliest work first on the reference list.

    • 7

Cite the article's title by writing it without quotes, italics, bolding or any other embellishment. Follow the title with a period.

    • 8

Cite the periodical's publishing information. Type the name of the periodical that published the article and its volume number in italics. Use a comma to separate the periodical title from the volume number. Without skipping a space, put the issue number in parentheses, place a comma and list the page range followed by a period.
