How to Cite SparkNotes

SparkNotes is a website that contains synopses and analysis of both classic and modern literature. If you use information from SparkNotes for a paper, you must cite it to avoid plagiarism. Because SparkNotes is a web resource and has no page numbers, it is not necessary to cite SparkNotes within the text; simply mention the name of the author before you quote. However, you should list the website in the work-cited page at the end of your paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with the last and first name of the author, separated by a comma and concluded with a period. For example:

      Smith, Jackie.

    • 2

List the title of the resource in italics, followed by a period. For example:

SparkNote on William Golding's Lord of the Flies.

    • 3

List the day, month and year on which you accessed the website. The names of months other than May, June and July should be abbreviated. For example:

      11 Oct. 2009.

    • 4

End your citation with the full URL of the page you are citing. This should be enclosed in angle brackets and followed by a period. For example:

The finished citation should appear as follows:

Smith, Jackie. SparkNote on William Golding's Lord of the Flies. 11 Oct. 2009. <http://www.sparknotes.com/golding/flies>.

Remember to italicize the title of the page.
