How to Cite an Autobiography

Creating the "Works Cited" page at the end of a college or high-school essay is arguably one of the most difficult parts of paper writing. Because English students use a specific MLA format to cite works used in a paper, teachers and professors often expect a "Works Cited" page that is free of any mistakes or errors. Autobiographies seem difficult to cite because the book's subject is the author. However, autobiographies are cited very similarly to conventionally written books.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin a new page after the final page of your paper. Type "Works Cited" at the top of the new page and hit "enter" twice to start the citation on a new line.

    • 2

Type the author's last name and first name, separated by a comma and followed by a period. For example: "Lastname, Firstname."

    • 3

After the period and a space, write the title of the book in italics, followed by a period. Make sure to capitalize each letter of the book's name. If your computer does not have italics, you may put the title within quotation marks. For example: "Title of Book."

    • 4

Turn through the first few pages of the book until you find the publishing information. Write down the city of the book's publication, followed by a colon. Type in the book publisher, followed by a comma, then the year of publication. For example: "Place of Publication: Publisher, Publication year."

    • 5

After a space, enter the publication medium, followed by a period. For example: "Print."

    • 6

If the citation takes up more than one line, indent the second line.
