How to Cite Newspapers Without Page Numbers

It is likely that all or most newspaper sources you encounter will have page numbers. However, if you access an older text that has been damaged or an article in a paper that for whatever reason is not paginated, you will simply be unable to give your reader those facts. Remember, proper citation is about giving your reader as much pertinent information as you can. If you need to use data from a newspaper without page numbers, provide as much publication information as possible.

      Cite the last name of the author and the year of publication parenthetically within the text in American Psychological Association (APA) style. For example: (Smith, 1987).

      Position your citation directly after quoting or paraphrasing. For example: One article alleged that Reagan "knew exactly what he was doing" (Smith, 1987).

      Use the following template for an entry on your works-cited page: Author's Last Name, First Initial. (Year, Month Day). Title of article. Name of Newspaper (in italics).

    MLA Style
