How to Cite Article Titles

Any scholastic or professional writing requires that you cite any sources that you have referenced for the information included in the paper. When the source of reference happens to be an article in a publication, there is a specific method for referencing it. There are two basic formatting methods to cite articles: the Modern Language Association style and the American Psychological Association style. Most writing requirements will adhere to one of the two styles, however writing in the medical field may require an American Medical Association style.

Instructions

  1. MLA Style

    • 1

Enter the author or authors. Begin with the last name then the first name of the first author, separated by a comma. For any other authors, list their first name and then the last name.

    • 2

Enter the article title and publication name. Enter the entire title of the article, enclosed in quotation marks, ending with a period, which falls inside the quotation marks as well. Follow this with the name of the publication, written in italics, whether it be a newspaper, magazine or website.

    • 3

Enter the volume, issue, year and page numbers. To conclude your citing, enter the volume number followed by the issue number, separated by a period and without a space in between. Add a space between that and the year of the publication, which should be in parentheses and followed by a colon. Finally, the pages that the article is found on should be listed, separated by a hyphen.
