How to Cite Multiple Editors

When writing a reference paper, generally you have to conform to the rules of a particular style guide. Depending on the preferences of the person assigning the work or the university you attend, this is likely either the MLA, APA or Chicago style guide. Citing a reference with multiple editors is a bit tricky, as most citations start with the name of the editor. The three style guides are similar in its approach to this type of reference, but there are differences.

Instructions

  1. MLA Style

    • 1

Start with the last name of the editor who comes first alphabetically, followed by the first name, separated by a comma. Add the second name and a third name, if there are three editors, with the first name first. For example: Smith, John, Steve Johnson and Rob Williams. If there are more than three editors, cite the last name and then the first name of the editor who is first alphabetically, followed by "et al."

    • 2

Write the title of the work in italics.

    • 3

Write whatever edition it is, such as "3rd ed."

    • 4

Write the location of the publisher, followed by a colon and then the name of the publisher, followed by a comma and the year it was published.

    • 5

Finish the citation with the medium it was printed in, such as "Print."

    APA Style

    • 6

Begin with the last name of the first editor listed and then the first name, separated by a comma. List the next editor in the same way, as well as any subsequent editors, separating the last one from the rest with an ampersand instead of the word "and."

    • 7

Include the year that the publication was published in parentheses.

    • 8

Write out the title of the work in italics, followed by the edition (e.g., 3rd ed.) in parentheses, if applicable.

    • 9

Write the location where it was published, followed by a colon, followed by the name of the publisher.

    Chicago Style

    • 10

Begin with the full name of the editor, first name followed by middle initial, if applicable, and the last name. For two editors, list the second editor's name in the same way, separating the two names with the word "and." For more than two editors, separate the names with a comma, except for the last name, which should be separated with the word "and."

    • 11

Write the name of the work in italics.

    • 12

Write the publication date for the work. Follow it with the location where it was published, followed by a colon, followed by the name of the publisher, all in parentheses.

    • 13

Write the page number, if applicable.
