How to Appropriately Cite a Textbook With APA

The American Psychological Association established the APA style guide for psychologists to use when writing and publishing research papers. A cited source helps the reader know that the information in the article has been compiled from credible references while also telling them where to go for further information. The APA style guide has very specific ways to list all types of sources, including textbooks.

Instructions

    • 1

List the author of the textbook at the beginning of the citation. The author's name should be listed with last name first, followed by a comma, and then the first letter of the first name, followed by a period. For example: Kidder, T. If there are two authors then an "&" sign is placed between the two, and the authors are listed as they are on the textbook rather than alphabetical order. Such as, Frank, R., & Bernanke, B.

    • 2

Place the year that the textbook was written after the author's name, in parenthesis and followed by a period. For example, (2011).

    • 3

Write the name of the textbook next in italics and followed by a period, with only the first word capitalized, as in, Principles of macroeconomics.

    • 4

List the city of the publisher, followed by a colon, and then write the name of the publisher, followed by a period. Such as, Boston: McGraw-Hill.
