How to Cite Editors in Research Papers

Good research means good sourcing and citations. While it can seem confusing to sort through the many formatting variations that apply to a references section, it's really just a matter of carefully applying the rules specific to each of your sources. In the case of a research paper, this generally means following APA (American Psychological Association) or MLA (Modern Language Association) guidelines. The two styles are similar, but slightly different in their handling of editors in citations.

Instructions

  1. APA Style

    • 1

Format the edited source in your list of references as follows: Lastname1, A. B., & Lastname2, A. B. (Eds.). (2011). Book title in italics. City of Publication: Publisher. For one editor, change "Eds." to "Ed." For two or more editors, list the names alphabetically and separate names with an ampersand (&). Use a hanging indent on all references; this means the first line of the reference is flush with the left margin, while subsequent lines are indented.

    • 2

Alphabetize the references by the first last name that appears for each reference, whether that name is an editor or author.

    • 3

Cite editors the same way you cite authors in the text of the paper. For example: "The year 2011 would bring devastation to the world markets not seen since the 1930s" (Lastname1 & Lastname2, year, p. #). In the case of a book with authors and editors, use the author's name for in-text citations.

    MLA Style

    • 4

Format the edited source in your works cited as follows: EditorLastName, EditorFirstName, and EditorFirstName EditorLastName, eds. Book Name in Italics. City: Publisher, Year. If the source has an author, use the author name(s) before the book's title. Add the editor after the book title, in this format: Ed. EditorFirstName EditorLastName. Use a hanging indent throughout your works cited section.

    • 5

Alphabetize the references by the first last name that appears for each reference, whether that first name is an editor or an author.

    • 6

Cite editors like you would authors in the body of the paper. For example: "The year 2011 would bring devastation to the world markets not seen since the 1930s" (EditorLastName page#). Note that the period goes after the citation and there is no comma within the citation. Use an ampersand between editor names. In the case of a book with authors and editors, use the author's name for in-text citations.
