How Do I Cite an Analytical Essay?

Analytical essays can provide a wealth of factual information and extrapolated opinions. The goal of analytical essays is to use established facts to create original thoughts about a subject, such as a book, person or historic event. When citing the analytical essay, include in your text whether the information from the essay is one of the supporting facts, or the author's opinion about the subject. Analytical essays are commonly found in books of collect essays. Cite both the essay and the book in which you found it.

      Select your citation style. The American Psychological Association (APA) citation is widely accepted and is the guide for this citation.

      Gather the information you need about the essay for the citation. Get the name of the essay's author or authors, the date when the essay was published, and the title of the essay.

      Gather the information about the book in which the essay was published. Get the name of the book editor, the title of the book, the page numbers for the essay, the city of publication and the publisher's name.

      Put all of the citation information into format: Last Name, First Initial. (Year). Title of Analytical Essay. In First Name Initial of Editor. Last Name of Editor (Ed.), Title of Book from which the Essay Came (pp. xx-xx). City of Publication: Name of Book Publisher. Include the word "In" prior to the First Name Initial of the Editor and "(Ed.)" after the Last Name of Editor.

      Add additional authors of the essay in the order in which they appear on the essay. Use the format for citing the first author to cite the additional authors, and add a comma between each author's name.
